Catholic Charities and the Archdiocese ask for immunity
The Archdiocese, through Catholic Charities, is telling the media it
needs legislation limiting liability for foster care services. Laws like that are designed to protect wrong doers, not abused and neglected children.
Do we really want new laws letting the catholic church
avoid responsibility for the sexual and physical abuse of children
placed under its care? I don't think so. That would be a huge step
backwards. Of course the Archdiocese can afford to hire lobbyists to push for laws limiting its liability. The children will never have that luxury. I cannot think of a group with less political muscle than foster children.
I think we want to make sure these helpless children are given decent
care--not perfect care, but decent care. Organizations that cannot
provide decent care won't be able to get insurance and in the end,
that is the way it should be. Lawsuits that point out unsafe
situations sometimes shut down poor operations, but in the end they
improve the acceptable standard of care, and that is what the
children deserve.
Remember if you give foster care agencies immunity you take away the basic rights of abused and neglected foster children. That is not a fair trade.
